Wife / Colette

I couldn't resist programming THE WIFE and COLETTE back-to-back; two very similar stories separated by more than a century. After marrying a successful Parisian writer, Colette is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendor of Paris in the late 1800s. She is soon ghostwriting for her famous husband, and also pens a simi-autobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a best-seller and a cultural sensation. Colette's fight over creative ownership defies gender roles and drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression. COLETTE starring Keira Knightly and Dominic West begins this Friday in the Starlight Room.

Claire Foy speaks a line in the trailer to FIRST MAN that knocks me out every time I hear it: "You're a bunch of boys. You don't have anything under control!" It's a smart line from the great writer Josh Singer (THE WEST WING, SPOTLIGHT, THE POST), and cuts right to the heart of this exciting story about Neil Armstrong's journey to the moon in 1969. The movie begins this Friday in the Rosebud Cinema.

A STAR IS BORN rocked the house last weekend, and will be holding over in the Rose for at least another two weeks. Lady Gaga is fabulous.

Season three of our popular COMMUNITY ARTS FILM SERIES begins this Sunday, but in a desire to kick it off with a twist, it begins with a lecture by the esteemed Estelle Lingo, Associate Professor, Art History at the University of Washington. Her talk is entitled DRAPING MICHELANGELO: FRANCESCO MOCHI, GIANLORENZO BERNINI AND THE BIRTH OF BAROQUE SCULPTURE. Ms. Lingo recently delivered this lecture at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Tickets for this event are selling fast.

And tickets are also selling fast for NOBODY'S FOOL, the final film in our tribute to Paul Newman. It screens next Wednesday (10/17) as part of Classics @ the Starlight.
