This Week’s Movie Reviews
Paper & Glue & Shipwrights

In 2017, 89-year-old Agnés Varda, one of the leading figures of the French New Wave, and 33-year-old photographer and muralist JR teamed up to create the enchanting road movie and Oscar nominee FACES PLACES. Varda's spirit is felt throughout JR's new documentary PAPER & GLUE. JR is famous for his enormous installations featuring pictures of everyday people, images he pastes almost anywhere. This vibrant movie tells three different stories. But there's a common thread here: not just people, but the relationships between them, which are, the films suggests, as glue is to paper. This exciting documentary is initially playing for only three days - Friday thru Sunday - but will return for a longer engagement. "Paper & Glue is a film that challenges viewers' perceptions by lifting the voices of people and places that are often overlooked." -JR

As profiled in THE BOWMAKERS (now streaming through our Film Library), Port Townsend resident Charles Espey is a world-renown master bowmaker. But were you aware that he is also a master filmmaker? I'm honored to present his latest feature, SHIPWRIGHTS ON THE CRANE, also streaming. Charles is an observational filmmaker; he plants the camera and lets life unfold before his lens. In doing so he is patient and respectful and generous with his subjects. "In general I feel completely at a loss trying to describe why I make films the way I do because it's like trying to describe why you have a gut feeling or think something is beautiful. Words fall flat...Reality is so pure and simple, so amazing, it has to be enough. I don't add a musical score or a voice over explaining everything because they aren't part of the world I film. I have to trust that some people will be content to figure out what's happening themselves." -Charles Espey
