This Week’s Movie Reviews
Umbrellas & Poetry

While the dynamic duo of Tom Cruise and Maggie Smith continues to dazzle in TOP GUN: MAVERICK and DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA, we also have new, culturally-rich entertainment this weekend, on-screen and in-person.

JAZZ FEST: A NEW ORLEANS STORY is a toe-tapping, affectionate, rollicking good time. The music and performances will send you out of the Starlight with a smile, and likely hungry for some of the delicious food you've just seen on screen. Rockin' the house at the 50th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, Aaron Neville, Jimmy Buffett, Earth, Wind & Fire, Samantha Fish, Ellis Marsalis Jr and sons, Herbie Hancock, the Crocodile Gumboot Dancers of South Africa and many, many more. "The musical numbers are sensational." -RogerEbert.com

On Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in the Starlight we are proud to host a poetry ready by Kathryn Hunt of Port Townsend, and Maryna Ajaja of Seattle. Both poets will have books for purchase and signing, and the writers will be interviewed by Tree Swenson. Tickets.

The angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve was launched to stardom by the dazzling musical heart-tugger THE UMBRERLLAS OF CHERBOURG (1964). She plays an umbrella-shop owner's delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through lilting songs by the great composer Michel Legrand, THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time. Movie introduction by Patrick Jennings, children's book author and Starlight Room manager. Tickets.

Saturday at 9:55 a.m. the Metropolitan Opera presents HAMLET, and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. the National Theatre of London presents HENRY V.

The great documentarian Heddy Honigmann passed away last month. Her film FOREVER has always been one of my favorites. You can find it in the Rose Theatre Film Library.
