This Week’s Movie Reviews
Joni @ 75

Joni Mitchell at 75! That's a hard one to wrap my brain around. I still have my Court and Spark LP, surprisingly in one piece after playing it repeatedly when it first came out in '69. To mark this momentous birthday, Joni's friends decided to throw her a little party. Filmed over two nights at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, JONI 75: A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION brings together a big-name line up of performers to pay tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter. Seal, James Taylor, Norah Jones, Brandi Carlile, Diana Krall, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Los Lobos, Glen Hansard and more perform songs from Mitchell's extensive catalogue of 19 studio albums. The celebration culminates with all of the stars performing Big Yellow Taxi and presenting a birthday cake to Joni on stage. Don't miss this wonderful tribute to one of the greatest songwriters ever. One night only, Thursday, February 7th @ 7:30. Tickets now on sale: Rose Theatre Members $10, Non-Members $15.

RBG was one of the most successful films that the Rose has ever played. And we played it for a record 12 weeks. ON THE BASIS OF SEX will surpass RBG on a national level, but not in Port Townsend. That documentary captured peoples' attention unlike few movies ever do. ON THE BASIS OF SEX stars Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer as Ruth and Martin Ginsburg, and recounts Ruth's struggles for equal rights and her ascendancy to U.S. Supreme Court Justice. "This film will inspire generations to come." -The Wrap

AT ETERNITY'S GATE is a movie about a painter, directed by a painter. Julian Schnabel made his name as an artist before moving into film directing - BASQUIAT, BEFORE NIGHT FALLS, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY. And the great Jean-Claude Carriere (THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING) co-wrote the screenplay. "Schnabel's dream portrait of [Vincent] van Gogh is made whole by its star, Willem Dafoe, whose radiant intensity fills every corner of the film." -Time. "Schnabel has made not just an exquisite film but an argument for art...a vivid, intensely affecting portrait of Vincent van Gogh toward the end of his life." -The New York Times

MARY POPPINS RETURNS ends this Thursday, while VICE and MARY QUEEN OF SCOTTS are both holding over for another week.

Great London theatre is on screen this weekend. On Saturday Alfred Molina stars as painter Mark Rothko in the acclaimed production of RED.
"Alfred Molina gives a towering performance as Rothko." -The Guardian

And on Sunday Ralph Fiennes and Sofie Okonedo star in William Shakespeare's riveting tragedy ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA. "Simon Goodwin's production is dazzling." -Financial Times
