A funny thing happened on the way to the Oscars, the Academy decided to surprise almost everyone. Manohla Dargis, writing in the The New York Times captured the memorable moment quite well. "Well, that was fun, and delightfully unexpected. I spent much of last night, steeling myself to be disappointed...what I didn't expect is that a brilliantly directed South Korean story of haves and have-nots would conquer the academy. PARASITE of course is holding over for another week, moving from the Rosebud to the Rose Friday, with two shows daily.
We have two special events this evening (2/12), AFTER PARKLAND plays in the Rose at 7:15, and a sneak preview of PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE in the Starlight at 7:30. PORTRAIT is sold out, but will be returning later in the month for a regular engagement.
Tickets became available Monday for the FREE member screening of WESTERN STARS, the musical documentary starring and co-directed by Bruce Springsteen. Over half the tickets have already been claimed at the box office, so don't wait too long to get yours. You must present a current Rose Theatre membership card. One ticket per member.
Next Wednesday (2/19) we're presenting a favorite documentary of mine for Starlight Classics Night - WHEN WE WERE KINGS - which centers around the "Rumble in the Jungle," the 1974 heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire. But the movie is about so much more than that; the charm, grace, and defiance of Ali, the basking in his role as black America's proud ambassador to postcolonial Africa. Two decades in the making, WHEN WE WERE KINGS features interviews with Normal Mailer and Bill Plimpton, and includes killer music and performances by B.B. King, Bill Withers, Miriam Makeba, James Brown, and the Spinners. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1996.
