Q: What's a movie theater without movies and popcorn and patrons? A: Quiet I experience that deafening silence nearly every day when I venture into the Rose to respond to messages and the voluminous correspondence from the Employment Security Department on behalf of my employees.
Programming the Rose and Starlight has always been the best part of my job, and streaming movies - which we began last week - has allowed me a quasi-return to that pleasure. But I certainly wouldn't trade it for the real thing. I miss all of you, and how I long to hear, "I"ll have a Lassie in a Chaplin and stop half way."
Our streaming line-up expands this week with the addition of 4 more movies: the gentle drama DRIVEWAYS starring Brian Dennehy, with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes; EARTH, the Berlin International Film Festival Jury Prize Winner, which we're presenting in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22nd; THE BOOKSELLERS, which was originally scheduled to open at the Rose last Friday; and BALLOON, an edge-of-your-seat true story about a dramatic escape from East Germany in 1979.
And speaking of booksellers, I would like to give a shout-out to the three wonderful book stores in Port Townsend - Imprint Books, William James Bookseller and Insatiables. They constitute a remarkable resource for a town of our size. Although The Imprint is closed for book browsing, they continue to fulfill orders with direct-to-home shipping.
