This Week’s Movie Reviews
Widows

Greetings Rose Fans, WIDOWS, the new heist film from writer-director Steve McQueen is about as far removed from other work as one could imagine. His other films include HUNGER, SHAME and 12 YEARS A SLAVE. Adapted by McQueen and novelist-screenwriter Gillian Flynn (GONE GIRL), WIDOWS is about a group of women who share a debt left behind by their criminal - and now deceased - husbands. The movie costars Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Colin Farrell, Jackie Weaver, Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson.

"If all heist movies were like this, I'd never leave the multiplexes." -Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times. "A tense and satisfying action drama with a decidedly feminist bent." -Dana Stevens, Slate. "With a killer cast, director Steve McQueen turns four women and a heist into the powerhouse thriller of the year. You're in for a hell of a ride." - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone. "The emotional currents that power Steve McQueen's brilliant genre exercise are different - it's society inequity, exhaustion at corruption and outright anger at a bullshit system that steals from the poor and gives to the rich." -RogerEbert.com

BOY ERASED plays through tomorrow - Thursday 11/29 - while FANTASTIC BEASTS and CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? switch venues for one more week. And FREE SOLO is holding over for another weekend, this Saturday and Sunday in the Rosebud.

Our four-film, Katherine Hepburn tribute has gotten off to a less than rousing start. The distributor sent the wrong version of LITTLE WOMEN four weeks ago, and last week our copy of BRINGING UP BABY was faulty. My apologies for this. HOLIDAY, playing next Wednesday (12/5) has been received and quality tested. And it's a wonderful movie, one of my favorites; Hepburn and Grant at their best.

Four Late Night @ the Starlight films have just been booked: THE BIG LEBOWSKI (12/15), WONDER BOYS (1/5), THELMA AND LOUISE (1/26), STOP MAKING SENSE (2/16).

Now a holiday tradition, Julie Taymor's beloved production of Mozart's enchanting fairy tale THE MAGIC FLUTE returns in its abridged English-language version for families for one showing this Saturday at 12:55.

And our new season of stunning ballets from the Bolshoi begins this Sunday with their acclaimed production of DON QUIXOTE.
