This Week’s Movie Reviews
Popes & Queen

Award season is upon us, and I'm pleased that the Golden Globe nominations this past weekend acknowledged  THE TWO POPES, with acting nominations for Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, as well as for Best Picture (Drama) and Best Screenplay. As New York Times film critic A.O. Scott wrote, "THE TWO POPES is really three movies: a behind the scenes tale of Vatican politics, a mini-biopic about the current pontiff, and a two-man study of friendship, rivalry and major British acting...The third is absolutely riveting, a subtle and engaging double portrait that touches on complicated matters of faith, ambition and moral responsibility." The movie opens in both the Rose (matinee and evening) and the Starlight Room (matinees only) this Friday. (As this is a Netflix movie, it may only play for one week)

Extraordinary British acting is also on screen this week in QUEEN & SLIM, the hot new indie film that is being compared to BONNIE & CLYDE. Newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya (GET OUT) are riveting as a couple on the run after an encounter with a police officer escalates, and two young people flee for their lives. The movie also hails the directorial debut of Melina Matsoukas. "This movie feels like something new, and also as if its been around forever, waiting for its moment." -New York Times. [The film] "has a remarkable power. You watch it recognizing the world you know, and wishing you didn't." -Seattle Times

THE NUTCRACKER from the Bolshoi Ballet, and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFEare annual winter-time favorites, and this year we present two showings of each. The Starlight showing of WONDERFUL LIFE is already sold out, and only 25 tickets remain for the Rosebud showing on Sunday 12/21.

This week we debut our new Rose Theatre and Starlight Room rechargeable gift cards. They replace our old gift certificates, and eliminate the long-standing problem of not being able to use them for online ticket purchases. And gift memberships are now also available in our online shop. See below.

The sneak preview next Thursday (12/19) of STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is sold out, but tickets for its regular engagement - beginning 12/20 - go on sale this coming Monday, December 16th.
