As often happens with art and artists, Buster Keaton's THE GENERAL was not well received by critics and audiences when it was released in 1926. But today it is considered one of the greatest films ever made. Keaton (1895-1966) was a true multi-hyphenate - actor, comedienne, director, producer, screenwriter and stunt performer. THE GENERAL falls within his most creative, accomplished period - 1920-1929 - when he worked without interruption on a series of films that made him the greatest actor-director in the history of movies. With the failure of THE GENERAL upon its release, Keaton's career began to decline and he lost his artistic independence when he signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
