This Week’s Movie Reviews

It's Sneak Peek Week at the Rose. On Saturday at noon we present MAIDEN, and next Thursday evening (7/25) at 7:00 PM Quentin Tarantino's highly anticipated ONCE UPON A TIME IN...HOLLYWOOD.  Both films have been well reviewed, and MAIDEN, especially, seems tailor-made for Port Townsend. MAIDEN will open for a regular engagement at the Rose two weeks later (8/2), and ONCE UPON A TIME IN...HOLLYWOOD will open for a regular run Friday, July 26th.

Watch for news in next week's newsletter about two more upcoming previews - the new thriller ECCO by Port Townsend High School graduate Ben Medina, and the new documentary THE BOWMAKERS by Port Townsend director Ward Serrill. ECCO will open August 9th, and THE BOWMAKERS premiere will be Saturday, August 17th at 6:00 PM.

All three features currently playing at the Rose and Starlight will be here for another week. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, our classics feature next Wednesday (7/24) is sold out. SOME LIKE IT HOT is sold out as well, but tickets are still available for THE KILLERS, starring Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner (8/21).

Tickets are selling fast for our two presentations of KINKY BOOTS, the London production of the hit musical - 8/11 & 8/17.

While attending the 47th Dance on Camera Festival in New York last weekend, I experienced one of those rare, collective moments that felt movie-like, especially because it began while I was watching a movie. The city power went out on the Upper West Side for three hours, bringing that part of Manhattan to a near stand still. Pedestrians started directing traffic-clogged intersections, emergency vehicles were blaring everywhere, and restaurants, theatres and stores emptied, bringing a mass of humanity into the streets. Broadway went dark, but actors and musicians continued to entertain us on the sidewalks. I walked 41 blocks back to where I was staying, enjoying every surreal moment of a power outage that brought people together.

Mark your calendars - the Rose's next Dance on Camera Festival will be March 7-8, 2020.
